"... that my story is told truthfully ..." About the life and work of Emilie Schindler

Childhood and Youth in Moravia
Emilie Pelzl was born on 22 October 1907 in Alt-Moletein (today called Maletín), in the Schönhengstgau region. Her parents, Maria and Josef Pelzl, were rich farmers. They had a big farm. So Emilie helped with farm work when she was very young. She worked in the barn, the forest, and the fields.
We don’t know much about her school life. In 1921/22, she went to a school for housekeeping in Prerau Monastery (Přerov). From 1925 to 1927, she went to an agricultural school.
Emilie loved animals and all living things from a young age. She was strong and had her own opinion. Her grandmother and especially her mother influenced her a lot. Emilie looked up to her mother, who helped poor and weak people.
After World War I, her father Josef came back home very sick. Emilie helped her mother take care of him. This helped her later when she cared for sick people in Brünnlitz. At this time, she also began to think that war was wrong.
Quote from Emilie Schindler: „Most of the time, I stayed with my grandmother, who took great care of me. Even today, I can still see her clearly in my mind. I was a very picky eater, and she always tried to give me nice food. But I was stubborn — if I didn’t want to eat, I didn’t. Not even her favourite chocolate could change my mind.“
